SA Questions
3rd and Final Exam

When television became available on a commercial basis in the 1940s there was a major paradigm shift in Western visual culture; for the first time one did not have to go outside the home to experience some visual aspect of one's culture, rather, visual culture came to the home via TV. Discuss how this paradigm shift further blurred the distinction between fine art and popular art. In your discussion you should touch on such points as: the development of mass media and mass audiences and how television contributed to the merging fine and popular art contexts (advertising being a major component); the change in venues that TV brought about for viewing and experiencing visual culture; and how early television contributed to the second wave of globalization.

Like television, advertising has played a key role in blurring the distinction of fine art and popular art art. Discuss this role by touching on such points as: how our aesthetic and conceptual response to machine-made art/images has changed (noting the effects of capitalism on art and the alienation of the proletariat from his or her work/products); the role that "Pop Art" and artists (you should mention specific Pop artists) played in the merging of commercial art and fine art; and how advertising has become the source for our cultural  myths and icons.

Video art and Net art are relatively new art forms, but, like the avant garde art movements of the 1960s and 70s, have played a significant role in expanding the reach of art beyond the urban "art ghetto" and into everyday life. Discuss the formal and technical elements of these two mediums and how they have "decentralized" the art world. Also discuss the art forms that have emerged out of these two electronic mediums and how they have further contributed to the blurring of the boundaries between fine and popular art. You should mention specific works of art/artists in your discussion.

The second half of this course (and the textbook) covered two art historical periods, the modern and the postmodern art periods. Discuss in detail the differences between modern and postmodern art. In your discussion you should mention specific works of art which are examples from each time period, noting the formal and conceptual elements of these works. You should also include in your discussion the role that mass media has played in the development of modern and postmodern art.
