MATH 242, Section E8 policy sheet
Class Sessions
will be held at 1 PM Mondays, Wednesdays
and Fridays; we will usually meet in room 24 in Illini Hall to work at
the computers. One day each week, typically fridays, we will spend some
time discussing the material in 245 Altgeld Hall. See also the
schedule.
Textbook
The textbook is on the computer. However there is also a paper copy
``Calculus and Mathematica, Vector Calculus'' by Davis, Uhl and
Porta available at the bookstores. Some students like to use it for
reference, but you are not required to buy the book.
Group Work
is an important aspect of this course. You will be
required to work with one or two partners on the first two homework
assignments. On Monday, 25 January, I will ask each person in class whether they
have formed a group; I will assign partners to those students that do not
yet have them. After the second homework assignment, students will be free
to rearrange their workgroups, although I strongly encourage groups of 2
for the homework.
Office Hours
are tentatively set for 1-2PM Tuesdays in
my office 245 Illini Hall.
You can also set up an appointment to meet at some other time; the easiest
way to arrange such an appointment is by e-mail, since I typically
check my email at least twice a day.
Grading Policies
Individual grades in this course will not be curved.
On any given exam/quiz/assignment
potentially every student can earn an A.
The numerical scores of all exams and assignments will be used in computing a
final score that will determine your final letter grade:
Homework |
50% |
|
Quizzes |
10% |
|
Hour Exams |
2 x 10% |
Scheduled for 3/8 and 4/30 (temporarily) |
Final Project |
20% |
Due Monday, May 10, 4:00PM |
There will be about 13 homeworks, which you need to submit electronically
on the announced due dates. There is a 1 calendar day grace period for
late homework due to computer screw ups and other unforeseen
circumstances. However you should send an email to Michelle to
explain the circumstances as soon as possible.
Doing the assigned work regularly,
seriously, and carefully is vital to your success in this course.
Although your homework is heavily weighted, your final letter grade will be
at most 1 higher than your combined exam grades.
There will be occasional quizzes that will be typically announced in
the previous class period. They are typically on homework problems or
literacy sheets and they are supposed to give you some practice for
the exams.
The exams will be pencil and paper.
There will be a final project instead of a final exam.
More information on this will follow soon.
