- New business
- Dr. Lombard – New Major and Portfolio Requirements
- New Major Requirements
- If changing to new major requirements – check with Silvario
- Make sure graduation application reflects desire to graduate under new major
- Much simpler
- Same number of units
- No Themes
- Distribution Requirements are still in place
- Geographical – 3 world areas
- Pre 1800 course
- One course in Gender/Women in History
- Fewer lower division requirements within the major
- 2 sequences for lower division history
- Western civilizations
- World History and US History
- Either taken at CSUSM or Community College
- Freshman composition
- All other lower division requirements are no longer required
- IE: Sociology, Philosophy, etc
- Still have to fulfill lower GE Requirements
- Upper Division New Requirements

- 400 level seminar course
- New Portfolio Requirements
- Under new major – Portfolio is done in 301 and 400 level seminar classes
- Assessment done at the beginning of 301 and the end of 400 level seminar
- Contains the same types of questions that the portfolio is addressing.
- **If you already completed the 400 level seminar, you are fine. You do NOT have to complete a portfolio.
- Social Science Major Changes
- Due to No Child Left Behind and the fact the CSUSM is a smaller university, have not gotten their NCLB waiver programs approved.
- Our waiver will expire July 2008.
- Expecting NCLB waiver to be approved but not for sure.
- Themes and Portfolio still apply to Social Science Waiver
- Please see your advisor for more information on your individual case as their may be different exceptions made.
- New Changes this Year
- Dual Meetings
- Tuesdays during Uhour above Starbucks – games
- More informal than Wednesday meetings
- Minutes from prior Wednesday meeting will be passed out
- Minutes will also be posted on the webpage
- Wednesdays 4pm in the Dome – guest speakers
- More formal
- Inviting professors to come speak.

- Contains important information about events as well as some information you might be interested in – new book releases, historical venues in and around San Diego County.
- Will be emailing this out on the last day of the month so it is available to you on the first day of the following month.
- Also available at the webpage
- Aim is to keep everyone informed
- Booklist – for members who like to read and keep up on new theories and information.

- Brand new webpage
- Contains upcoming events on an event calendar, information about the chapter.
- Important announcements will also be made there.
- Newsletter is also available on the webpage by the day after its release.
- Scott has experience with webpage design and will assisting with the Phi Alpha Theta website.
- Main page contains events occurring within the next few weeks so members can access that page quickly without having to look at their newsletter.
- Upcoming events and events calendar are posted on the webpage.

- History Club

- Future Outings for this Semester--agreed with interest
- Dead Sea Scrolls
- Planning this as chapter field trip with Engen giving a short lecture on the scrolls.
- Member interested was high.
- Scott pointed out that there were two sets of scrolls
- This is true – they are switching scrolls three months into the current exhibit.
- Denise has emailed them for the exact date of the switch so the field trip can be planning more accurately.
- PAT is planning on paying half of each member’s entrance fee so each member will be responsible for $12 of the entrance fee.
- Las Vegas
- Possible outings include –
- Titanic Exhibit - $22 at Tropicana
- Sign Graveyard - $15. by appointment
- Engen Specialized Historical Tour
- Planning to stay at Tropicana
- Rates range from $45 - $75 depending on room type and occupancy.
- We will be working on getting some special comps and discount tickets to events.
- Members are more interested in planning Las Vegas Trip for Spring Break.

- Donations/Fundraising
- If anyone knows suitable places to inquire about donations, please let us know.
- Or if you have an inside connection with a business and could get some donations for the chapter we would greatly appreciate it.
- Possible Fundraising
- Car Wash
- We would like to offer a scholarship for next year and fundraising will get this done.
- If members could come up with ideas for fundraising ideas and email them to Melissa it would be greatly appreciate
- Dinner nights –
- Used as fundraising – get percentage of the meal
- Also a fun activity for members to hang out.
- Suggested restaurants
- Possibly having dinner nights every two months or just for fundraising.

- Palomar Panels
- Dr. Linda Dudik at Palomar College teachers a WWII Generation class where you get to meet and listen to WWII Survivors talk about their experience.
- The panels are an extremely rewarding experience and we encourage everyone to attend.
- Pacific Panel – September 19th 6:30 – 9:20
- Holocaust Panel – October 10th 6:30-9:20
- Q and A – reserved for enrolled Palomar students
- Some questions can be asked during breaks or after panel
- No Video Taping allowed
- There are already people videotaping on site who can give you copies if needed.
- Do not leave parking passes in car.

- September 25th during Uhour
- Jennifer Miller will be bringing an easy up canopy

- Will be historically geared.

- Member Forum
- Melissa – will be trying to go to local places (bowling allies, restaurants) and having fun nights.
- Historical Tour of Disneyland
- Member interest was VERY high
- Get to see lobby of exclusive members only Club 33
- Possible GRE Prep Courses
- One was offered last semester
- Melissa is going to check into getting another one offered this semester.
- Scott – if anyone goes to England he recommends visiting the Churchill war museum
- Very interesting museum and a lot of interesting facts.
- Elections
- We will be holding elections for new officer positions including vice president, historian, and publicity.
- Elections will be done in October.
- Please email Melissa Marquez if you are interested before October 15th.
