This was our most successful event of the year!

We had 26 members and guests join us for this event. This was a great experience. There was room to walk around. There was plenty of written information to read. We were able to see furniture, coins, pots and other every day items used by the people of Pompeii. There were items as part of the exhibit that had been buried with the dead prior to the catastophic event that would end all life in Pompeii. To see what the living felt was important to bury with the dead in order to provide comfort for them in the afterlife was incredibly fascinating. There were tiny sculptures of people doing daily activities, tiny pots and pans, tiny dishes and utencils, and many other incredibly miniature items. We asked each other questions and wished Professor Engen had been able to join us for this event. We were able, however, to answer some questions that were posed to us by other patrons. "Hey, we really have retained this history."

This was an absolutely wonderful exhibit. The last few artifacts at the end of the exhibit left many of us feeling a bit emotional. The human drama was incredibly apparent. The casts of the bodies, frozen in position, just the way they were in the last moments of their lives was powerful imagery. It was as if you could see the horror on their faces as they realized they were going to die.

If you did not go with PAT/HC, you should think about attending the exhibit before it leaves on June 15th. I promise, it will be well worth your time.

As with the Dead Sea Scrolls Exhibit, PAT offered a discount of $16 per member to keep the cost low so more students could afford to attend. In addition to the price break, Professor Engen gave the members a lecture prior to our visit to the exhibit. The lecture added so much to our experience. Many, if not most, of our members have had Professor Engen in one or more of his Ancient History classes and we felt we had enough background knowledge to really benefit from all that the exhibit offered in artifacts for viewing.

The A Day in Pompeii exhibit was a one in four opportunity (the exhibit only visited four American cities) and we all felt fortunate to have been able to go.
