My step father was a Vietnam vet, and a proud Marine. He had a friend who apparently was KIA and I cannot find him on your list. His name was Ted Cutler. I do not know if Ted was his legal first name, nor do I know what year he was killed. I do know they were both Force Recon. I am trying to piece together what occurred when Ted passed on and any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, your effort compiling, organizing, and drafting the various lists is an incredibly admirable achievement. Chris Danley Boise, ID danleyc@msn.com 20 Jun 09
My name is Phil Rogers. My Father was Major William W. Rogers, USMC. He went ejected from his Crusader F8C on April 17th, 1964. I was just two years old at the time. I am interested in hearing from some of the men who served with him or witnessed his last flight. According to his brothers, there were questions raised at the time about his disappearance, but when his oldest brother came back from trying to get more info he reported that the family was told not to ask anymore questions. Case closed. I have waited this long to research this only out of consideration for my mother and step-father, whom she met and married in 1966. It would be great to finally get something more than the article below for closure. bowhawk62@comcast.net 20 Jun 09

"C" Company, 9th Motor Transport Battalion (1965-66) Vietnam. My name is MSgt LeRoy P. Holmberg, and I am looking for other Marines that served with me during the early periods of the Vietnam Conflict. There are few, if any, mentions of this units involvement in the actions seen in and around DaNang RVN. I am trying to put together a time line, with names and pictures of those that served during this time frame. We had a rough beginning and many long days and nights with little or no sleep, but our unit strived to aide other Marines and units in their need for transportation and supplies. Also if anyone has a story about their involvement with this Battalion please forward it to my email. I would like to have info about the first Marine convoy between DaNang and ChuLai and on highway 1, or even about the relocation of Vietnamese around the air strip in Danang. I know it's been a long time and memories are vague but lets get some of the times recorded before they are all forgotten. Thanks and Semper Fi holmberg6@hotmail.com 5 Jun 09

When I was cleaning out a garage almost 30 years ago I came across a small box with some very old photos and I started to look through them. In this box I found a telegram from Apr 1945 telling a family that their son, Pfc Claude Ray Palmer, Jr., US Marine Corp, had been killed at Iwo Jima on 16 March 45. There was a couple military papers and the letter from Pres. Roosevelt in grateful memory. I believe he belongs on your list. The article says he was a radioman with the reconnaisance unit of the Fifth Marine Division. He was 19 when he died. I have kept all these things in his memory. I have been trying to find his family all these years to no avail. Any suggestions? If I don't find them this year I have purchased a special frame that will memorialize him for his sacrifice. I still shed a tear for him and I didn't even know him. If you have any questions, please email me at home. suisei@mchsi.com 27 Feb 09

I am the proud daughter of a fellow Marine. My father, "Top" Thomas A. Martin passed away on 30 August 2008 from cancer. He served 26 years in the Marine Corp, doing 3 tours of Vietnam with the last being in 1975 - surviving them all - amazingly. I'm not sure of the first tours, but I know he served with his best friend, who we were also stationed with later in Germany (who has also passed away about 8 years ago) Skip Linville, and he was located in AZ at the time of his death. We were also with Dale Aho, Mike Brady (also passed away) and another gentleman by the name of Rufus - all fellow Marines. My father did training in Parris Island in the early 60's, and in 1977 he was stationed in Camp Pendleton. From there (1978) we went over to the 497th RTG in Weisbaden, Germany. I also know he was with 1 MAR DIV somewhere along the way. If ANYONE has any photographs of my father while he was in Vietnam or any other place - please email me. I would greatly appreciate it as would my children and my mom. calamitie4u2@yahoo.com 23 Sept 08

Aloha, Ewa Field was a famous USMC WW-II Aviation Base, historic December 7 battlesite, and was a Naval Airfield going back to 1925. We are trying to save it from being bulldozed for a Shopping Center. Ewa Field is currently on President Bush's list to be named as part of a wider National Pearl Harbor Monument, designated under the National Antiquites Act of 1906. The land is a USMC WW-II airfield that was likely the FIRST American Battle of World War II- being struck by IJN Zero fighters at 07:55 AM, Dec. 7, 1941, BEFORE Pearl Harbor was struck. It was also the "Base of Aces", with famous Ace pilot squadrons like the "Black Sheep, "Swash Bucklers" and "Wake Island Avengers". We need YOUR help to make the U.S. Navy comply with Federal Preservation Statutes and Presidential Executive Orders and NOT turn Historic WW-II Ewa Field into a Shopping Center! My very close cousin Wayne Eugene Lipsett was in the U.S. Marines back in the Vietnam war. I was in the Navy at Atsugi, Japan when he was in Vietnam. This was in 1965-67 time period. I'm not sure when he joined the Marines however, he was born in 1947, quit school to join and Im guessing early 1965, maybe in 64. He died on March 12, 2008 from esophical cancer, after surviving a lung cancer five or six years prior. I was looking for a website to include his name as a proud Marine. I also wonder if "agent orange" had anything to do with his illness. Another family member, Uncle my marriage was proud of his service to Marine Corp. He was in during WWII and was at Iwo Jima. He died some years ago, September of 1989. Jesse Thomas Wilson, Sr. His son, another Marine served in the late 1960's at Quantico pretty much his whole enlistment. He was sharp Marine and was Marine of the Quarter several times. He was Jesse Thomas Wilson, Jr. He lives in Charlotte, NC, very successful businessman. Bill Culver wculver@comcast.net 12 May 08

Hello. My name is Angela, and my husband, Donald Edward Putnam, of North Carolina, served in Vietnam in 1966-1967 in 3rd battalion, 4th Marines, apparently Company M is what appears on his DD214. On May 29th, 1967 in Quang Tri he was nearly fatally wounded, and brought back to the states. He spent over 2yrs in military hospitals and was disabled retired. His worse injury was to his right leg, and for over 40yrs he has fought reoccuring infections in that leg. His most recent surgeries on the leg were last April, and again last week. The infections have caused a blood disorder which is now terminal. He is currently in the hospital. We have been married 20yrs, and during that time, he has stated many times that he would like to see some of the men who served with him during that time. Because of that wish, I am on a quest to find some of the men who knew him. Can you tell me if you served with him during that time, and if you knew him? I can print out all emails to take to him, or give you his phone number, address, whatever is needed that he can be in contact with you. He was a Private First Class when injured, and retired as a Lance Corporal. We currently live in North Carolina. Please let me know if you served with him. Thank you! In 1961 we lived in Tarawa Terrace in Camp LeJune, N.C. My sister, Sarah, became pregnant by a young Marine named Pat (or Patrick) Huey. Of course my family took our family and moved, my father requested transfer. Why I am writing this is for my niece. She was born in 1962. She was a beautiful baby. She took our last name of Leitherland. My niece was eventually adopted by our parents and raised as our sister. In 1988, at the age of 25, she was killed in a car accident. She often wondered about her real father. The last 6 months of her life was spent living with me, my husband and our 3 children. If you know of a Pat Huey who was stationed in Camp LeJune in the early 60's, please let me know. We don't want anything from him. We just want to tell him what a beautiful daughter he had and that she wanted to know him. My email is buttercupmammie@hotmail.com 11 Jan 08

My name is Jack Todd Werley and was in MCRD San Diego, California Platoon 374 K Company, 3rd RTBn which was formed up on 16 Apr 1968. Myself and Alfonso Allerid from Las Vegas New Mexico were at Military Entrance Processing Center in Albuquerque New Mexico when we were both inducted into the Marine Corps. Our Platoon Commander was SSgt Schmidt along with SSgt Gilpin and Cpl Mosier and another as Drill Instructors. Alfonso and myself were a few of the last ones to make up Plt.374 as we arrived in San Diego around 2000 hours and called the Recruit Barracks to pick us up at the airport. After that what a ride. It was tough, but now all seems well worth it. I have a Platoon 374 book if anyone would ever need copy's of pictures in it. I would like to thank all of them for the excellent training I received while I was there at MCRD. After that I went to Schools Battalion at Camp Pendelton to become a 2531 Field Radio Operator. Went from there to ITR Infantry Training Regiment at Pendelton for another six weeks. Went home on leave for 20 days and back to Pendelton for Staging Btn for a couple of weeks. From there we were all foreign to each other and they stuck us on a Boeing 707 and sent us over the big pond to Okinawa. We stopper for fuel in Anchorage, Alaska and Tokyo Japan. The plane landed in DaNang, Vietnam where we all got off and were disbursed through out Vietnam to units that needed replacements. I was needed by MABS 36 Communications Squadron and our Officer was 1stLt Louis A. Juarez from El Paso, Texas. Our Section Chief was Gunny Lindscott from North Dakota as he was Sioux Indian. I remember quite a few of the guys and have a picture of the roster board with all of their names on it. If anyone is interested my phone number is 505 839 4678. Semper Fi to all Marines especially the ones I trained with I will never forget. Werleynm@aol.com 25 Apr 07

My father, Ernest Ishmael Jr., completed his basic training at MCRD P.I. in early 1941. The 1938-1941 history of P.I. suggests a training period as short as 24 days. Dad qualified Rifle Marksman 2Jan41, so he may have graduated as early as the second week of Jan.’41. Can anyone provide a platoon number? P.I. has negatives of platoons on file, but require a platoon number. There’s no cross-index to dates, S/N, etc. I also believe he was a D.I. at P.I., so any info would be appreciated. The family of the late James Robert Brenizer, born in Toledo, Ohio enlisting in the Merchant Marine immediately out of high school, seeks information and verification on his military service during World War II. We understand that dad served in the Merchant Marine from 1944 until 1946. We discovered that he may have served on three ships: the John T. Holt, the Charles M. Schwab, and the Thomas W. Hyde, which indicates that he may have been in Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean theaters. My family is in the process of ordering him a grave marker, and we would like to add acknowlegdement of his military service on his marker. Any and all information would be of great assistance at this point. Our family understands that he acheived the rank of Junior Assistant Purser, and received training at Sheepshead Bay. This may have included some training in the Medical Corps. There is a familly picture of him in uniform and it looks like he is wearing a medical symbol on his left collar. We also do not know the significance a ribbon that he is wearing in the same photo. The Brenizer family appreciates in advance, any leads, or other information that may be forwarded. Please contact James R. Brenizer, Jr. by email at brenizer@buckeye-express.com 25 Nov 06

I am hoping to find anyone who served with my father, MSgt. Ralph E. "Marty" Martin. He enlisted in 1942 and completed boot camp at MCRD San Diego. I don't know much of his career between 1942 and the late 60's, except that he was overseas a number of times (WWII, South Pacific, Korea and at least two tours to Vietnam). He has mentioned that he was Recon in Vietnam. He was stationed at MCAS El Toro from the late 60's to 1970. He was stationed in Iwakuni, Japan from 1970 to 1971 and then at MCAS Beaufort from 1971 to 1975 or 76 when he retired. During his tours at El Toro and Beaufort, he worked in repair and maintenance of jet fighter radar. I am hosting a surprise birthday party for him 10 November 06 (and OF COURSE we will also be celebrating the USMC birthday!!) and would love to include contacts from his old military days. Searching for Ex-Marine, first name JIM (sorry, no last name) who lived in Mesa, Arizona during the early-eighties (1983-1984). During active duty he had been Marine Recon and had served as a Drill Instructor. I have no information on his command, unit, or where he was even stationed. He moved to Texas and was married sometime in 1984 or 1985, if I’m not mistaken. His father used to own a radio station in Texas years ago. Jim used to stand in my living room and sing into an empty pitcher while I played guitar to “Oh Where Oh Where Could My Baby Be”. We lost touch after he left Arizona. Not much to go on I know but, perhaps someone, somewhere knows the man and can let him know that that guy from Mesa, Arizona he was once going to run off and be a Mercenary with is looking for him. I'm looking for anyone who knew my dad, James Brenizer, from Toledo, Ohio. He served as a Merchant Marine from 1944-46, in all different theaters - Pacific, Atlantic, Mediterranean. I have documentation that he served on three ships: the John T. Holt, the Charles M. Schwab, and the Thomas W. Hyde. I'm in the process of ordering him a grave marker, and this has led me on a wondrous journey of learning more about his life during the war. ANY information would be helpful at this point, as I am just starting my search. I have documentation that he acheived the rank of junior assistant purser, and was trained at Sheepshead Bay - which I think may have meant he was trained as in the medical corps. I also have a picture of him in uniform and it looks like he's wearing a medical symbol on his left collar. I sure could use some expert advice on what the ribbon's he's wearing in the photo mean - so if there's anyone out there who can decipher these, please contact me. I am trying to get information on my MCRD San Deigo recruit platoon. I was injured and set to the hospital just a few weeks beforn graduation and placed in another platoon some 90 days later. We were 3rf Recruit Bn. 300 Series, I think Platoon 362. It would have been one of the last 12 week platoons because when I got out of the hospital I was placed in an 8 week platoon with about two weeks left. The platoon I am looking for graduated in about Sept or Oct 1965. The Drill Instructors were: S/Sgt. Lindsey, Sgt. Ives and Sgt. Miller. These same three D.I.s had the eight week platoon I was assigned to after leaving the hospital. Hope you can help as I don't know where else to try. arrowheadtx@yahoo.com 15 May 06

Looking for my Senior Drill Instructor from MCRD San Diego, 1968. SSGT Richard J. Schmidt was the Platoon Commander of Plt. 374, K Company, 3d RTBn, June 1968. If any former DIs knew or worked with Schmidt, please email me with ANY details you might have on this person. Schmidt almost defies finding. Have any Marines heard of or known Donald E. Gilpin? He was my Drill Instructor at MCRDSD in 1968. He was a SSgt at the time. Probably entered USMC in 1959/60. He had two tours of VN. During his second tour of VN(1969/70?), he was tapped by American Intel to be an Undercover Agent. He seems to have fallen off the radar screen after he returned CONUS. Is reported to have been killed in a car accident. Probably a cover. He doesn't show up on ANY searches, including LAPD's sophisticated people tracking systems. Might still be U/C if still alive, but I doubt it. He doesn't show up on any USMC retirement lists. Doesn't show up on any Death Indexes. I've been chasing this "ghost" for a long time, and I'm not the only one to search for him. His old friend from the late 50s has been searching for 30 years, using LAPD's systems(retired LAPD). So if any former DIs or any Marines, or even anyone else has known or seen this person, please contact me. ANY information on him would be a help. Thank you for your help. p.s. If he was or still is U/C, does anyone have a tip on how to dig him up? algranville_2000@yahoo.com Posted 6 Sep 05

I am trying to figure out a way to help my dad find out information on dog tags that were found on the Laos/Vietnam Border and given to my father who was in the marines during vietnam himself. They were given to him by an employee of his whose brother is from Laos. I checked the databases of MIA/POW names and found nothing. I will continue to persue this while awaiting a response. These men were Marines and my father gave me there names and military #'s. My dads name is Dennis V. Palonis. I did not find them on the vietnam memorial wall listing that was the only other listing I checked. My dad just said he would be surprised that their bodies would have not been claimed, not left behind. Dog tags have the following on them: Shell, L, 2353793, U.S.M.C., b.a.c.t.g.h.t.; Edlow, MG, 2436685, U.S.M.C., b.a.c.t.i.h.x.; Hampton, RL, 2462432, U.S.M.C., e.c.i.h.c.o.l.a.l.; These tags were found with skeletons. viking_princess@sbcglobal.net Posted 22 Jan 05

My name is Lucy. Dad, a LTCOL, USMC, taught us the meaning of "Semper Fi" from "birth" Dad has passed (too early) to a special place reserved only for "Marines" "Our Guardians" The year after Dad died, my husband, who had just "Retired" from the military, died. (Death was Military Connected" as "they" called it. Age, only 45! That was three years ago, (36.5 months ago), I count the days. Mom and I have been, and are asking ourselves - why, - we lost them both within 1 year? We try our best to console each other, but, we have a difficult time understanding - Why" "Why the "Both" of them"?.... Within a year of each other? "Heaven must need "Good Marines" - there must be a battle going on that we are unaware of that "He" has to take our "Finest" to deal with it. Along with all of our other Brothers & Sisters who he has brought and is bringing to heaven "Home." They are our "True Warriors." mulh9967@bellsouth.net Posted 16 Jan 05

My name is Kim. I am writing on behalf of my dad, Harvey Jordan. I have been creating Marine scrap pages for him with the use of old > pictures my mom loaned me. I found this article about my dad which is below. He was in the Seventh Marines and the article mentions Da Nang. I just think it would be wonderful if somebody out there knew or remembers my dad. From what I understand, he lost a lot of buddies and acquaintencees during that year, but maybe its possible there are some still alive and well that my dad could make contact with. I think it would be good therapy for him, as he lives with that war everyday. I am not sure of the year, I believe it was 1968. I think if I asked him, Dad when were you in Nam? He would probably respond, "lastnight". I will try to find out details about the unit he was in, etc but in the meantime, I figured I would write. Thanks. nbrown@tampabay.rr.com Posted 17 Dec 04
