Homework #1 for

Math 162, Calculus with Applications, II

Note: Parts 2, 4, 5 and 6 are due Monday, September 8. This is the beginning of the writing requirement for this course. Since (if you did not take Math 160 from me last semester) you may not have ever had to "write mathematics" before, you'll start to do this in Parts 4 - 6 by mimicking another writer. (Part 2 is to emphasize the importance of the passage that you be asked to copy.)

1. Read the Section "To The Student" on page xvi. (You don't have too worry too much about the Note on Logic right now - we'll discuss that in more detail when it becomes necessary.)

2. Copy the first three paragraphs of "To The Students." (This is important advice - take it to heart.)

3. Carefully read (with pencil and paper in hand so that you can "work through" the examples instead of just reading them) Sections 6.1. This is supposed to be a review for you; if you find that you don't know this material, take the time now to remedy this.

4. Copy out either Example 1 or Example 2 (your choice) from Section 6.1. Feel free to make some changes in language, so long as your selection still combines words, symbols and diagrams to give a complete, clear solution to the stated problem. As you do this exercise, you should pay particular attention to the natural way that the author uses English sentences to explain mathematical operations, and how the mathematics and English flow together - that's the purpose of this exercise.

5. Copy either Example 3 or Example 4 (your choice) from Section 6.1. Follow the suggestions given in part 4.

6. Copy Example 5 (no choice) from Section 6.1. Again, follow the suggestions given in part 4.

7. Reading Assignment (for Wednesday): Review Section 6.1 (you should have already seen this in MATH 160) and read Section 6.6.
