Dear Sir.
All the upper Coquille Indians have left the Reservation, they first sent three Men down to the Coquille, who came back and reported, that the Whites wanted them to return to their country and that they should be protected, upon which information they immediately left. I sent an Express to Sub. Agent Drew informing him of their departure, but I fear they will be in advance of my Express as they left in the night and will travel night and day. If they are not brought back at once, the Coast tribes will all leave in less than a month; I would go but unless I have a force sufficient to compel them to return it is useless.

Very Respectfully
Your Obt. Servt.
(Signed) R. B. Metcalf.
Indian Agent.
