| Results of the 15th Annual Margaret McKinley Memorial Student Scholarship Essay Competition
The winner of the 2006 McKinley Scholarship essay competition is Monique Escamilla, Department of Information Studies at University of California, Los Angeles. Ms. Escamilla is an ALA Spectrum Scholar and second year MLIS student at UCLA. She worked for various Internet companies as a researcher and coder before returning to school to study chemistry and biology. Monique co-founded UCLA's Informatics Discussion Group which has merged with the student ASIS&T chapter. Along with other student ASIS&T leaders, Monique is authoring an informatics wiki for fellow students to utilize. Monique is also finishing an internship at Symantec Corporation as an information architect. She happily asserts that this experience has solidified her desire to become an information architect. She has also started her own company with Grace Lau, another UCLA MLIS informatics student and ASIS&T member, called InfoCooks which specializes in designing and maintaining community-based web sites.
In addition to the winning entry, essays from Rachel Clarke, School of Library and Information Science at San José State University and Katie Shilton, Department of Information Studies at University of California, Los Angeles were selected as runners-up from a large pool of essays coming from California, Hawaii, New Zealand and Australia.

About the Margaret McKinley Memorial Student Scholarship Essay Competition: The Los Angeles Chapter of the American Society for Information Science and Technology offers this annual Student Scholarship Essay Competition for current library and information science graduate students. This Competition, first established in 1992, and renamed in memory of the late Margaret McKinley in 1993, is intended to encourage students in Librarianship and Information Science Programs to consider the benefits of participation in the activities of professional societies. The winner receives reimbursement funding up to US $1,000 for registration, airfare, and hotel expenses to attend ASIST's Annual Meeting and a one-year membership in ASIST. Two runners-up receive one-year memberships in ASIST.
