ESL Web Activity

Help Page

This probably won't be very useful
unless you are working on one of my ESL class assignments.

Here's a list of several points that will help you in completing your class assignments - just click on whichever point you need help with:

What is Netscape and how do I use it?

Netscape is a browser that will make it easy for you to find information on the World Wide Web. To learn how to manipulate this program, Click Here

When you click the link above, it will open into a new browser window. To return to this page, close the other window.

How can I open a second browser window?

With some of your assignments, you will need 2 browsing windows open at the same time (probably the page with your ESL lesson and another from a different web site). To accomplish this, follow these steps:

  1. Make your first page fit into half of the screen VERTICALLY by dragging the two small squares at the bottom right-hand corner of the window. You should have a tall, skinny window on the left side of your screen.
  2. Place the arrow on title bar. It's located at the top of the window. It has the title of the page (e.g. this page is called instructions.html) and many lines spanning the whole window. Drag the tall, skinny window til it is on the right side of the screen.
  3. Now, go to File|New Web Browser and a new window will open. It will be full-sized, so you will need to repeat step #1.
  4. Adjust the windows so that they are both approximately the same size and fit closely together without actually touching or overlapping. In one window, keep your lesson or guide open and in the other, you will be able to hunt throught the WWW for the information that you need. *Only one window can be active at one time. To make the other window active, you just need to click on it.

You can use this same technique if you need to have two different programs open at the same time. For example, you might need your grammar lesson or a site with important information open in Netscape and your email program open to write down answers.

Where can I find an email pen pal?

You might already have an email pen pal. If so, I do require your pen pal to be a different nationality than you and have a different first language. If you need another pen pal that fits this discription, or if you don't have one yet, CLICK HERE to choose one, and add your name to the list if you want.

What do I have to do to complete my email assignments?

What must I do to email you with my responses to your assignments?

There are two ways to email me your assignments:

  • Or you can use my email link available on each lesson page. This might be easier because you can copy and paste information from different sites onto the email form. Also, you don't have to keep track of my email address if you don't want to.
  • If you choose to mail me from the lesson page and you are using a computer from the university lab, you might be asked to change the mail preferences under the Option menu item. Just ignore this, but make sure you include your name in the text of your email message to me or it will be like forgetting to put your name on a homework assignment.

Do you have other questions about your assignments?

Send me any questions or comments that you have about Netscape or your assignments. I'm interested to hear your reactions to this site. Is it clear? Is it useful? Have you been able to practice your grammar?

If you do email me from here, let me know if you are one of my ESL students, another ESL student, or someone completely different!
