             This volume reveals the similarities of theory of subcreation and the writing style of the author of 

             Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

             This volume contains a complete biography including illustrations.

 

Drout, Michael D.C. ed Beowulf and the Critics by J. R. R. Tolkien.  Tempe: Arizona

            Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, 2002.

 

            The editor Michael D.C. Drout acquired the original notes and both manuscripts

            for Beowulf and the Critics from the Tolkien estate.  Comparing the two reveals

            Tolkien’s evolution of thought on the poem.  The volume also contains a very

insightful introduction with an evaluation of Tolkien’s effect on the literary world.

             Shippey discusses Tolkien’s sources of inspiration for his ‘Middle-earth’ fantasies,

            but also includes Tolkien’s shorter works, autobiographies, and the critic’s reactions to his work.
