The editor Michael D.C. Drout acquired the original notes and both manuscripts for Beowulf and the Critics from the Tolkien estate. Comparing the two reveals Tolkien’s evolution of thought on the poem. The volume also contains a very insightful introduction with an evaluation of Tolkien’s effect on the literary world.
