Writing Exercise #2: Writing From Your Life: Finding Your Narrator's
Voice
Homework Writing Exercise
Due: September 18
In Finding Your Writer's Voice, the section on ÒStoryÓ (pp. 73 - 155) has many helpful insights, examples
and exercises geared towards our next video assignment #2, The Episode: Writing
From Your Life.
In order to start to experiment with the narratorÕs voice
for video assignment #2, your writing exercise for this week is based on this
section, especially the pages on anecdotes to stories, first person narrator,
and third person narrator/persona.
The
exercises are meant to give you an introduction to crafting point of view and
using a narrator in your upcoming video assignment.
I recommend that you use a story from your life to do these
exercises. This exercise can be 2 -3 pages in length depending on the complexity
of the story. To help you analyze third person narrative distance, you can
ask yourself the questions on page 115 in Finding Your WriterÕs Voice.
Choose ONE of the exercises below from Finding Your
WriterÕs Voice to complete and hand in:
Exercise #1: Meeting the First Person NarratorÑNarrative
Distance; The detail for this exercise is on page 106, and is wither #2 or #4.
Exercise #2: Experiments in Points of View; The details for this exercise is on page 101; you can choose any of the exercises 1 through 5.
(If you want to use an exercise from this section on Story that you find more compelling which is linked to
p.o.v. and narration, you can choose that one instead. However, please indicate
which exercise you are using including the page number from the book.)
