Mogollon, NM

After the VLA, my next stop was actually in Reserve, NM.  It's an interesting, very small, town with very friendly people and a couple of places to eat.  I had intended to camp near there, but found the campgrounds to be a little too rough and so ended up staying in a small motel.  I couldn't find an easy way to get any pictures of Reserve, so there aren't any.  The next destination was Mogollon...

Along the way, I was surprised to see this very well-preserved, but abandoned, truss bridge just off the highway.

The climb to Mogollon from the main highway is quite steep -- 2080' in 7 miles.

On a twisty and narrow road, with no guard rails and no room to pull over....

Mining in Mogollon started in the late 1800's and apparently was quite active only for about 20 years, to 1915.  These buildings, though, seem much more modern than that and suggest a longer period of activity.

As in many other parts of New Mexico, there are some artists and other people living in the old town.  Though, when I was there, there was only a small bakery (very good) and one general store open.
