Media Production

I have been working with multimedia since 1987, when Hypercard, the first off-the-shelf multimedia production tool was released. Along the way I have made stops with companies like Gryphon Software Corporation, the creators of the popular program Morph and the Disney Activity Center series (Aladdin and Lion King) for children, San Diego-based General Atomics, and consulting for a variety of clients.

I have also gained considerable experience as a writer, director, producer, and talent for local video productions.

Some recent accomplishments :

Smart Rooms

  • Total smart rooms on campus: 111
  • Markstein Hall Completion: 27 smart classrooms completed, with: data projector, built-in computer, DVD/VHS playback, control system, document camera, and wireless microphones. Project on-budget and completed in time that was originally allocated for completion of 1st floor only.

Production Facilty

  • Completion: Large capital project with $2.5M in funding. Priniciple assets of facility: two 3-camera video studios, audio studio, five video edit rooms, two audio edit rooms, master control/head end, and other support areas. All production areas served by 24 terabyte networked storage system (SAN) for large-scale support of student post-production. Campuswide resources include: large networked storage for offline storage of media projects (V-drive), and broadcast of cable television over campus networks (IPTV), and video-on-demand (VOD) for archived programming;
  • MediaSite: The Mediasite system allows easy creation of integrated web-delivered lectures, presentations, and training, and has been deployed in a small studio room in the Kellogg Library. This system has already been heavily used for recording lectures for online courses in WebCT, as well as training in use of computer applications;
  • Deployment of online equipment checkout system;
  • Deployment of IPTV online television system replacting CATV on campus.

Current projects:

  • the Nursing program;
  • the Center for Children and Families;
  • a new full-featured distance learning room;
  • addition of production and distance learning elements to a lecture hall in Markstein Hall;.

I have taught part-time for several years for the College of Business and the Department of Visual and Performing Art. I enjoy teaching and it helps to provide professional variety for me and also to give me a fresh perspective on the challenges instructors face.
