What is now the Ocean House, located at 300 Carlsbad Village Drive in Carlsbad, was once the home of Gerhard Schutte, known as the "Father of Carlsbad." This title was bestowed upon him because he helped create the Carlsbad Land and Water Company. This real estate company helped Carlsbad grow from a small town into the city it is today. He, like many others, was drawn to Carlsbad by Frazier's well and the "miraculous healing elixir" which the water was said to provide. Originally from Germany, Schutte immigrated to the United States around 1856. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War in the Third Wisconsin Regiment.
He fought in multiple battles such as Gettysberg, Chancellorville and Antietam.
