The "idea" of Carlsbad started when a small group of entrepreneurs were attracted to the mineral springs in Carlsbad. They eventually formed the Carlsbad Land and Water Company. In order to promote tourism they heavily advertised the mineral springs and the healing powers which the water was said to have. The town was also lauded as a fantastic resting point when traveling by train from Los Angeles, or elsewhere, on their way to the Del Mar races, San Diego or Mexico. By 1919, tourists could not only grab a boxed chicken lunch and a bottle of mineral water to go, they also had the opportunity to check into one of the hotels and rest awhile before continuing their journey. As a result of multiple factors, many famous people used Carlsbad as a place of respite and recuperation, Leo Carrillo being one of them.
