Dr. Michael Shapiro retires

Computer scientist Dr. Michael Shapiro will retire after 10 years at SSC San Diego. He holds bachelors, masters, and doctorate degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from Purdue University. He first became acquainted with SSC San Diegos predecessor Navy Electronics Laboratory through his major professor, Maurice Halstead, who had worked at this center in the 1950s and 1960s.
"SSC San Diego has been an enjoyable place to work. I have participated in many interesting projects during my years here," he said.
Prior to joining SSC San Diego, Dr. Shapiro worked for several computer-related companies contributing to many new technologies. He also taught computer science and information systems courses at San Diego State University and appeared in a television series on computer literacy.
At SSC San Diego he worked on Navy and associated Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) standards task on software environments, POSIX, and Ada bindings. He is a senior member of IEEE.
Dr. Shapiro collaborated in teams and working groups studying management training, software reuse, and software process improvement. On one special assignment, he applied his hobby experience and training to design the lighting and sound control systems for the Command Center of the Future. He also helped write and edit many manuals, and wrote articles that appeared in IEEE and Association for Computing Machinery publications.
In retirement Dr. Shapiro will work more with his hobby as a sound designer, mostly for local community theaters. He also plans to write, possibly a book and magazine articles, and perhaps do some teaching.
